But there is a catch…

Summed up

The F80 has an excellent runtime of up to 80-minutes, although it does go down from there depending on attachments and the suction mode.

It also has the fantastic DuoClean vacuuming head which combines two cleaning heads in one, the MultiFLEX function that allows it to stand up freely, and a few other practical features like the LED headlights and fingertip controls.

We also love the incredible 5-year warranty.

Although it does have many excellent features, it also has some small shortcomings. The dirt cup is quite small, and the filter is not up to HEPA standards. The weight distribution could be better, and you may need to buy some additional tools in addition to purchasing replacement filters.

The bottom line:

This vacuum is highly adaptable, and it will make those daily cleanups quicker and easier. It has many practical features at a reasonable price, and it has already gained high user ratings and praising reviews, which is why we can see this vacuum becoming a bestseller.

If you're looking for a versatile mid-range stick vacuum that can handle all surfaces of your home, this is definitely one to consider.

Our rating

The newly upgraded Shark lightweight cordless stick vacuum F80 comes with a nice increase in the runtime and the same functional features as their previous ION series stick vacuums boasted.

This vacuum is quickly gaining some excellent reviews, and we can totally see why.

The Shark company is known for their excellent price-quality ratio. They are not a high-quality brand, but they do make reliable and durable machines that have innovative features.

They are also known for continually upgrading their vacuums with better design and features - although sometimes the upgrade can be a bit of a misrepresentation as you will learn later on in this review.

Look:

This is a great product, BUT there are some shortcomings you should be aware of before buying.

In this Shark ION F80 review, we will lay everything down: pros AND cons.

Key Features of Shark F80

The stick vacuum with the longest runtime

The most interesting feature in this vacuum is the runtime.

Upgraded from their previous ION stick vacuum that had a runtime of 2 x 22 minutes, this new F80 vacuum has exactly that – 80 minutes of runtime with two batteries used consecutively.

The vacuum comes with two lithium-ion batteries called ION Power Packs. Each battery can provide 40 minutes of suction – as a handheld vacuum with no tools attached and using the lower suction mode. This is exceptionally good when compared to other cordless vacuums.

When you attach tools and use the ION Boost Mode, the runtime is significantly lower.

What Shark claims is that you get ” Up to 60 minutes of runtime for hard floor cleaning and 50 minutes of runtime for carpet cleaning when using both batteries consecutively in ION Power Mode”. What they are referring to is the lower suction setting. If you use motorized tools and the ION Boost setting, unofficial user testing verifies the runtime will go down to 10 minutes per each battery.

But there is a catch:

To lengthen the runtime Shark didn’t actually design a better battery. Nope, the battery is the same as in the Shark IONFlex DuoClean x2.

What they did was they adjusted the suction to provide a better runtime at the cost of the suction power.

Since the vacuum mostly relies it’s cleaning power on the mechanics of the DuoClean head, the decrease in suction is not a significant shortcoming.

However, it does affect this vacuums ability to lift up dust from carpets. Although the brush roll does most of the work, a strong suction is still what pulls up some of the smaller particles.

Not a major flaw, but something to take note of.

Also:

Shark claims, that because you have two batteries, you can always have the other one in the charger while the other one is being used.

That’s true, but what they don’t like to promote is the fact that each battery needs 3.5 hours to be fully charged. If one battery runs out in 10-40 minutes and the other one needs 3.5 hours to charge, you can do the math.

Of course, you can always add as many batteries and chargers as you want, but that will bring up the cost.

We’re not saying the F80 cordless stick vacuum does not have an excellent runtime – it does! Up to 80 minutes of runtime – even without any attachments – is an excellent achievement. But just so you know what to expect in terms of actually using the vacuum and two batteries.

DuoClean attachment combines two cleaning heads in one

What we love about Shark stick vacuums is their easy-to-use DuoClean vacuuming head that combines two brush rolls in one tool.

With this cleaning head, you can move for one type of surface to another without changing the attachment and always get a perfect result.

The cleaning head has a soft and dense brush roll in the front. This brush is designed to carefully engage hard floor materials to give them a polished look. Its ability to pick up dust and small particles is fantastic, and because the opening in front of the brush roll is big enough, it can also pull in piles of debris.

And, because the brush is soft, it can be used on delicate materials like parquette.

The second brush roll has stiff bristles that can dig into carpets. With this feature, the vacuum has an excellent pick-up ability also on carpets, and it can give even thick area rugs a thorough clean.

MultiFLEX function for reaching under furniture and free-standing storage

One of the notable innovations in Shark stick vacuums is the MultiFLEX function that allows the wand to be folded in half.

What this does is it enables a free-standing a storage mode and bending the vacuum to glide it under furniture.

When you bend the vacuum, you can push the cleaning head under low-build furniture without having to bend down yourself. The vacuum can be a bit tricky to maneuver in this mode, but it does come in handy when you need to get to that pet hair lurking under your couch.

Although this feature can feel like a gimmick at first, many users have found it to be quite practical when vacuuming under furniture..

If you bend the vacuum even more and fold it in two, the weight distribution of the vacuum cleaner changes and it can stand freely. The function can be used during vacuuming if you need to let go of the handle to move some furniture out of the way. However, many users say they feel it’s just easier to lean the motor against something or to place the vacuum on the floor instead of folding it for a few seconds just to unfold it again. However, this feature is pretty convenient for storing the vacuum in a small space

LED headlights and fingertip controls

The LED headlights enable you to see under the couch and bed.

This feature is something many pet owners love to have because wads of pet hair tend to accumulate to those dark corners.

Also, fingertip controls make it easy to change the suction and surface modes with your thumb without letting go of the vacuum. You can quickly turn up the suction from the ION Power Mode to ION Boost Mode, or just adjust the speed of the brush rolls by switching settings between carpet and floor mode

These are small details, but features that make vacuuming a lot easier.

Washable Dirt cup

Unfortunately, the dust cup is smallish at only 0.3 dry quarts. It’s somewhat under the average when compared to other lightweight stick vacuums and handheld vacuums, and it's pretty small for pet owners.

If you have several long-haired pets, the container might fill up quickly. Also, if the dirt cup is packed full of pet hair, the vacuum might lose suction. Because of this, we would recommend one of the other stick vacuums for owners of many long-haired pets that shed a lot.

However:

The container is easily detached and emptied. You release the bottom of the dirt cup with a push of a button. The contents should fall out, but sometimes you do have to use your fingers to help the hair out if it is packed tight.

Suction power

Although for some reason Shark has chosen not to disclose the results from their ASTM F558 test (Standard Test Method for Measuring Air Performance Characteristics of Vacuum Cleaners), the vacuum actually has pretty good suction power.

Some users say, it can even lift up some lighter rugs, and it does perform well at picking up larger and heavier debris like food pellets or small pieces of gravel.

According to unofficial testing, the suction power at the lower suction setting is about 24 CFM, which is good.

As the DuoClean system mainly uses the mechanics of the brush rolls to lift up the dirt, the F80 has excellent performance even on the low suction mode.

The ION Boost Mode increases the suction to 38cfm, which is still pretty decent but falls quite a bit short compared to the Dyson V10.

Although the suction power could be higher, the vacuum still does an excellent job on bare floors as well as carpets and rugs.

The truth is:

They lowered the suction power to extend the battery life.

The cordless vacuum manufacturers are in competition for designing the stick vacuum that has the longest runtime.

Dyson has been upgrading their batteries year after year, and Shark had to do something to beat them. Instead of designing a better battery to improve their vacuums, they decided to bring down the suction power which affects how quickly the power is used up.

The F80 still has a high performance, because the brush roll does most of the work. But this is something you should keep in mind if when choosing the right vacuums for your needs.

Filtration

The filtration system has not changed since the previous ION MultiFLEX stick vacuums.

The vacuum has two pre-motor filters which are made of foam and felt. These filters are washable, and you should rinse them under cold water every month. Remember to let them dry completely before placing them back in.

The post-motor filter is also washable, and you should rinse it once every 9 months so that air flow won’t get restricted.

You should check the filters if the suction is low or the vacuum is not picking up dirt as it should. Also, never use soap to clean filters and always let them dry for at least 24 hours before placing them back in. The filters are not lifetime filters so you may need to replace them at some point. However, they are not expensive, and you can buy them online.

You also have to consider this:

The filtration system is not sealed, and the filter is not a HEPA filter. Therefore allergens may escape the filtration system and be pushed back into the air in the room. This is something that pet owners and people with allergies may need to take note of.

Performance

Pet Hair Removal

The DuoClean cleaning head does an excellent job at removing pet hair from both bare floors as well as carpets and rugs.

The two brush rolls very effectively grab all hair and guide it to the suction. For pet owners that want to get rid of all that dander and pet hair on their floor, this vacuum is an awesome choice.

What the vacuum is lacking is a motorized pet tool for upholstery. You can buy it separately online, and if you have pets, you definitely should.

The motorized brush roll tool from Shark is very useful, and it has excellent performance on upholstery, bedding, and carpets. If you want to get rid of that persistent pet hair, this tool is a must-have.

Carpet

Because of the DuoClean cleaning head, this vacuum has a fantastic ability to give even those thick carpets a deep clean.

Although the suction is not as strong as we would like for it to be, the brush roll mechanically picks up dirt and dust making up for the lower suction.

Users give this vacuums praising reviews on how it deep-cleans their carpets by digging deep into the surface.

Be careful though:

because the brush roll is very powerful it should not be used on delicate woven rugs when instructions prohibit cleaning with a brush roll tool.

Bare Floors

Again the DuoClean cleaning head is the magic feature here.

The soft brush roll in the front softly but firmly engages hard floor surfaces to pick up even the finest pieces of dust.

The result is a polished look, and many users say they can skip mopping because the vacuum is so effective at removing dust.

Upholstery

Unfortunately, the Shark ION F80 MultiFLEX does not come with a motorized tool for upholstery, although you can buy one as an add-on online.

The motorized brush roll tool from Shark is actually very effective at cleaning upholstered furniture, car seats, carpets and mattresses, which is why we would recommend it to most users.

Attachments

The Shark F80 has the amazing DuoClean feature we introduced above.

You can move from bare floor to carpets without having to change the cleaning head because Shark has combined both brush rolls into one attachment.

This feature makes vacuuming effortless:

The same cleaning head will give you a polished look on hard floor materials and a deep clean on carpets and rugs. The softer brush roll is delicate, and it effectively removes both large piles of debris and small particles of dust. The other brush roll, on the other hand, digs into carpets and lifts up dirt, debris, and dust.

But:

Having two brush rolls in one attachment makes it heavier to lift and you can not turn the brush rolls of for delicate woven rugs.

Because of the two motorized brush rolls, the vacuum does tend to pull itself forwards, and some users feel pulling the vacuum back while using the ION Boost Mode may strain your arm. However, while using the lower suction mode, the pull is not so strong, and the vacuum is easily maneuvered.

Another but:

The F80 only comes with two attachments: 8" Crevice Tool and the Upholstery tool. What is lacking is a dusting brush and a motorized brush roll tool for pet hair and carpeted stairs.

On the upside:

The vacuum is quickly converted into a practical hand vacuum by detaching the wand.

Shark does have some excellent tools you can buy separately online, but of course, you have to add up the additional costs to evaluate the price-quality ratio of this product.

Additional attachments include:

  • 12” Crevice Tool: longer access to tight spaces
  • 18” Flexi Crevice Tool: flexible crevice tool made of rubber
  • Duster Crevice Tool: a combination of crevice tool and delicate dusting brush
